Cleaning hotel rooms isn’t normally considered a thrilling career path. Then again, most hotel maids aren’t investigating suspicious photographs, rummaging through guests’ belongings and accidentally uncovering a conspiracy. This Bed We Made takes that gloriously nosy premise and turns it into a charming murder mystery set inside a 1950s Canadian hotel.
You play Sophie, a maid with a healthy interest in other people’s business and a slightly worrying enthusiasm for going through their luggage. Basically, your career has finally found the perfect justification for snooping.
Gaming Heaven
The story is the star. The mystery unfolds at a satisfying pace, with secrets, relationships and personal dramas gradually intertwining into something considerably more interesting than simply cleaning rooms. Your choices genuinely matter, affecting relationships and ultimately determining which of several endings you receive.
The 1950s setting is beautifully presented too. The hotel has a wonderfully period atmosphere, while the characters are sufficiently likeable, irritating or suspicious to make you care about what happens to them.
Exploration and puzzles fit naturally into the investigation. Searching rooms, reading notes and examining possessions might sound mundane, but the constant possibility of being caught makes even opening a drawer feel strangely illicit. Nothing says sophisticated detective work quite like panicking because you’ve been caught reading someone’s correspondence.
Gaming Hell
The technical presentation is noticeably less polished. Environments can look sparse, character animations are occasionally awkward and the lip-syncing has clearly decided that synchronisation is merely a suggestion.
Sophie’s internal monologue is useful for hints, but it can become repetitive, particularly when you’re already perfectly aware of what you’re supposed to do.
The game also occasionally pushes its preferred ending rather heavily, making it feel slightly less confident in allowing players to reach their own conclusions.
Final Judgement
This Bed We Made is an excellent narrative adventure with an unusually brilliant premise. Its engaging mystery, meaningful choices and wonderfully nosy protagonist make it easy to recommend, while multiple endings provide plenty of reason to return.
It may lack the technical polish of bigger productions, but the writing and atmosphere more than compensate. If you’ve ever wondered what would happen if Agatha Christie gave a hotel maid permission to rifle through everyone’s drawers, this is probably the closest you’re getting.
