Morels: The Hunt 2 review

Introduction

Morels: The Hunt 2 is here to prove that some hobbies should stay hobbies and never, ever, become video games. A follow-up to 2019’s mushroom-hunting sim nobody asked for, this sequel throws more mushrooms and more maps at players who are probably just looking for an excuse to procrastinate in nature without leaving their couch.

Gaming Heaven

The game features realistic environments and weather effects, and you’ll occasionally stumble upon a majestic deer or a cute fox while searching for fungi. Mythological creatures are thrown in for some bizarre flavour, because… well, who knows?

Gaming Hell

The gameplay loop is excruciatingly dull. You wander aimlessly through seven uninspired maps looking for mushrooms, occasionally snapping photos of animals that are more lifelike than your soul after two hours of this. The addition of mythological creatures? Laughable. Spotting a unicorn or Bigfoot might’ve been exciting, but in Morels 2, it feels like a last-ditch effort to distract from how little there is to do.

Final Judgement

If you’re into fungi, go outside. If you’re into photography, buy a real camera. Morels: The Hunt 2 tries to make mushroom picking fun, but ends up as engaging as watching moss grow.
