Hot Wheels Monster Trucks: Stunt Mayhem review

Introduction

Hot Wheels Monster Trucks: Stunt Mayhem takes the iconic toy cars out of the usual racetrack chaos and drops them into an arena designed for one purpose: unadulterated vehicular mayhem. Published by GameMill Entertainment, this PS5 game is all about massive stunts, bigger explosions, and absolutely no racing – just non-stop carnage on wheels.

Gaming Heaven

Launching your monster truck over ramps, smashing through obstacles, and chaining tricks for a high score is ridiculously fun. With three event types – Freestyle, Destruction, and Boss Attack – you’re encouraged to get creative with tricks, racking up combos as you fling these beasts around seven unique arenas. Freestyle and Destruction events may start to feel similar, but tossing a monster truck across a neon-colored playground somehow never gets old.

The arenas themselves are a visual treat. Whether you’re grinding up a serpent ramp or attempting backflips off a gorilla statue, each setting has its own style. The boss attack events add a nice challenge: down a few minions before facing the main “boss,” which mostly involves pulling a big stunt on a signature obstacle. The career mode lets you unlock recognizable trucks like Bone Crusher, each with a unique skill that can boost you through trickier sections.

Gaming Hell

While Stunt Mayhem is built for laughs, it’s frustrating that you can’t right your truck after a botched landing. A simple flip-reset would have kept those combos going. Also, the lack of online multiplayer is a downer; local co-op is fun but a little limiting in 2024. Additionally, the trucks all handle the same, so there’s not much variety in terms of vehicle performance, even if their design and skills vary.

Final Judgement

Stunt Mayhem is simple, silly, and packed with just enough smashing action to make it a great pick-up-and-play game. It might not reinvent the wheel, but it sure knows how to send it flying. For Hot Wheels fans and destruction lovers, it’s a no-brainer – just don’t expect deep gameplay.
