Neopets – Mega Mini Games Collection – The Neopian Arcade Odyssey review

Neopets: Mega Mini Games Collection – The Neopian Arcade Odyssey lands on PS5 like a cheerful blast from the past, all bright colours and familiar faces. For about ten minutes, it genuinely feels like you’ve stepped back into the golden days of browser games. Then it slowly dawns on you that this isn’t quite the grand return it thinks it is. It’s more like a school reunion where half the people didn’t turn up and the DJ’s playing the same three songs on loop.

To give it its due, the mini-games themselves still have a bit of life in them. Classics like Kass Basher and Meerca Chase remain oddly addictive, even if your reflexes aren’t what they used to be. There’s a simple charm to the presentation as well – it looks like Neopets, just tidied up a bit, which is probably the safest choice they could’ve made.

Arcade Mode is where things briefly improve. Being able to dip in and play what you want, when you want, feels like common sense. It’s relaxed, straightforward, and doesn’t get in your way – which makes it all the more baffling that the rest of the game does.

Story Mode is where it all goes a bit sideways. You’re forced to unlock games in a set order, then bizarrely locked out of going back to ones you actually enjoyed. It turns what should be a pick-up-and-play experience into a mildly irritating checklist. The story itself barely exists, so the restrictions feel completely pointless.

Worse still, the sense of identity that made Neopets appealing is nowhere to be found. No proper character creation, no real connection to what you’re doing – you’re just tagging along as someone else. Add in missing music in places, a lack of online play, and the odd technical hiccup, and it starts to feel half-finished.

Final Judgement

There’s a decent idea buried in here, but it’s been boxed in by odd decisions and a surprising lack of ambition. It’ll raise a nostalgic smile for a bit, then leave you wondering why you bothered.
