MechWarrior 5: Clans review

Introduction

It’s been a while since I stomped around in a mech, and MechWarrior 5: Clans brings back the nostalgic thunder. This time, we’re stepping into the giant boots of a member of the Smoke Jaguar clan, who promptly finds himself in the middle of galactic chaos. It’s got all the high-stakes drama of a space soap opera, played completely straight—and it’s unintentionally hilarious, in the best way.

Gaming Heaven

First off, the game’s got atmosphere and mech combat down. You’re not zipping around like Armored Core; here, every mech movement is chunky, like trying to get a lawnmower up a hill. And it works! The game’s universe feels war-torn and intense, and stomping through destructible environments is ridiculously satisfying. Weapons loadouts are extensive, so you can have a blast tweaking and testing new battle setups.

Strategic combat’s a high point, especially since you command a squad of four mech warriors. Between missions, you assign mechs, swap weapons, and spend XP to boost your team’s abilities. The command system, though a bit clunky, adds real depth; who you bring to the battle and how you handle your squad can make or break the fight.

Gaming Hell

Let’s talk quirks: the tactical Battle Grid. The idea’s solid—order your squad from an overhead view like a sci-fi commander. But in practice? Time doesn’t stop for commands, meaning you’ll get pounded by enemies while trying to direct your team, and it’s messy. And though the mech controls offer tank-like options for authenticity, anyone coming off faster-paced mech games will feel a bit… slow.

Final Judgement

MechWarrior 5: Clans isn’t for the faint of heart or patience. But for mech combat fans, it’s a unique experience packed with explosive battles and just enough galactic drama to keep you hooked. If you’re ready for a slower-paced, tactical mech fest, this one’s for you.
