Game of Thrones: Season 5 soundtrack review
Hear them roar! Season 5’s Game of Thrones soundtrack has been released in all its orchestral glory…
Having provided the soundtrack to all the previous series, composer Ramin Djawadi returned to the studio to provide a suitably epic musical backdrop to HBO’s ratings winner. With the likes of Iron Man, Blade: Trinity, Safe House and Pacific Rim under his belt, Djawadi is a Hollywood stalwart, and a natural choice when it came to bringing George RR Martin’s fantasy world to life.
Gripping audiences since 2011 with its tales of power struggles and royal betrayal, featuring the likes of the Lannisters, Targaryens and Stark houses, the series called for a soundtrack that mixed epic confrontation with a dark, forbidding atmosphere. Rest assured, Djawadi delivered in spades…
The soundtrack comprises of 18 tracks, each of which is relevant to a scene in the fifth series. From the famous opening theme tune, to dramatic likes of Blood of the Dragon and Hardhome, the majority of the tracks are ominous but memorable. These booming scores sit comfortably alongside the more melodic Jaws of the Viper and Atonement.
It has to be said not every track is quite so memorable, and there are a couple of decidedly forgettable scores among this lot. But that’s a minor niggle; for show purists and fans of classical music in general, these are quickly forgiven as on the whole this is an excellent soundtrack. There are some real gems here, and this is right up there with the best of Djawadi’s work.
